Condition: Instrument has a few cosmetic issues but plays well. Flatiron instruments have a legendary status among mandolin players and this 2K sounds great and plays like butter. Accesories that come with this instrument are a new canvas gigbag, a new set of strings, a digital mandolin tuner, a new leather braided strap and a moveable arm rest. These hairline cracks are hard to see but I tried to capture them in photo 7. Directly over the sound hole, there are 2 hairline cracks that have been professionally repaired and the "cletes" can be felt if you put your fingers in the soundhole. These problems do not affect the sound or playability of this instrument in any way. Also, the finish on the side of the ebony fingerboard over the heel is chipped a bit (photo 6). At the top of the headstock, the outer veneer is missing (photo 5).
There are a few problems, mostly cosmetic, that are in evidence. I believe the nut is 1 and 3/16 " and made of bone. I believe the shell design tailpiece (photo 8) is chrome. This instrument has the original ebony compensated bridge and 4 on a plate open gear tuners (photo 4) that all work well. Early Flatiron flat instruments were categorized either as model 1-2 or 3 and the"K" designated the wood used (Koa).

Serial number in this mandolin is 8012622 indicating it came to life in December of 1980 and was the 22nd instrument off the line.

Research shows that in the earliest days of the company their serial numbers contained only 7 digits as in the case of this instrument and that 8 digit serial numbers came later in time. The back of the headstock does show the embossed words "The Flatiron" (photo 4) and the sticker in the sound hole verifies this is a genuine Flatiron instrument (photo 2). In the earliest days of the Bozeman, Montana company "Back Porch Productions" which created Flatiron mandolins, the headstock did not even show the words "The Flatiron" or "Flatiron" as is the case with this instrument. The neck is mahogany with an ebony fingerboard adorned mother of pearl inlays. Koa is known for its musical enhancement and just keeps sounding better as time passes.

Excellent sounding and playing F5 scroll mandolin with highly flamed maple back, sides and neck, carved Sitka spruce top with parallel tone bar bracing, side bound like Monroes on the top, back, fretboard and peghead, "The Flatiron" and Gibson flowerpot peghead inlay in abalone and pearl, 1 1/8 inch nut, V profile neck, elevated and bound flat ebony fingerboard with block pearl inlays, bound pickguard, and gold tailpice and Schaller tuners with pearl buttons. They couldn't beat them, so they bought the company. When Gibson went to the NAMM show in 1987, these were the high quality mandolins they were competing with.
